Representative Steil and Senator Kennedy seek to stop the income of House and Senate members if the government isn’t funded.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana and Congressman Bryan Steil of Wisconsin recently introduced the “Withhold Member Pay During Shutdowns Act” and the “No Shutdown Paychecks to Politicians Act.” The bills seek to stop federal legislators from receiving income when they have not passed government funding legislation. The current government closure is now the longest in U.S. history.
Representative Steil said, “There is no reason our government should be shut down. If service members, men and women of federal law enforcement, and other essential employees are working without pay during the shutdown, members of Congress should not be paid either.”
Senator Kennedy said, “My bills ensure Congress feels the same pain as the folks we’re failing to pay — our troops, air traffic controllers, and federal workers. If we can’t do our jobs and fund the government, we don’t deserve a paycheck — plain and simple.”
